Residents of South and West Delhi areas will now be able to track their sanitation workers with the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) deciding to put the attendance of these workers online. The move comes following several complaints regarding the dismal performance of sanitation workers of the Corporation.

Following compaints fromresidents, Municipal Commissioner Manish Gupta has ordered putting attendance system of workers online. The first phase of the pilot project has been flagged off by putting online the attendance sheet of sanitation workers in the Central Zone. The sheets of all the remaining three zones — Najafgarh, South and West will be uploaded later.

Officials said the new system is being implemented to ensure that daily sanitation report and attendance of workers is in public domain. Citizen can also check whether the workers have done their work or not. They can also lodge complaint against them if people find them missing from the duty after marking their attendance,” an official said.

Sources in the SDMC said that about 50% of sanitation workers remain absent from their work after marking their attendance. “The new practice is being implemented to ensure that safai karamcharis (sanitation workers) report for duty every day after marking their attendance,” he said. In 2008, the erstwhile MCD had placed its staff under the biometric attendance system.
