South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has lifted 120 metric tonne of garbage from Yamuna River belt adjacent to Zakir Nagar, Batla House and DND flyway.

The waste was taken to construction and demolition waste processing site at Shastri Park for further processing.  A senior SDMC official said that the central zone of the civic body thoroughly cleaned the area along river belt, approximately three kilometer length, striven with garbage and malba and dominance of a large number of kabariwalas dealing with waste material of all types.

"All these rampant unlawful activities may take a heavy toll on fragile eco system of river Yamuna. The central zone deployed total five vehicles to remove 120 metric ton garbage and malba. The trucks undertook total 26 trips in removing malba from Yamuna River bank i.e. batla house to DND flyover," he said.

The official further said that the garbage includes 90-95 per cent mix, 4 to 8 percent municipal solid waste and plastic waste which have to be transported to designated waste to energy site of SDMC.

The SDMC will have to expedite the lifting of malba but its available resources and machinery are limited, hence, the desired pace will be difficult to achieve. SDMC will continue its sincere efforts to clean entire belt along Yamuna river belt.
