The South Delhi Municipal Corporation has bagged the prestigious first prize for the conservation of energy through its lED replacement

programme in the municipal sector. President Ram Nath Kovind handed over 'National Energy Conservation Award' to SDMC Commissioner Puneet Kumar Goel for his untiring efforts and inspiring leadership for executing the world's

largest lED replacement programme in the short span, resulting in saving nine crore units annually.

The award was presented in a function organised to celebrate the 'National Energy Conservation Day, 2017' at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

Puneet Kumar Goel congratulated his team for achieving such a marvellous feat at the national level. He said that SDMC is known for its novel initiative and it has all the

capabilities to meet the formidable targets in the shortest possible time.

A senior SDMC official said the total connected load of 2, 80,000 sodium vapour streetlight has been reduced from 37.50 MW to 18.31 MW after replacement of these lights with energy efficient lED lights. "The reduction in the connected load of street light corrects the energy deficit situation in Delhi, resulting in the more reliable power supply to the residents of Delhi," he said.

The official further said that earlier SDMC used to pay Rs 28.5 crore per annum for line maintenance. However, it has reduced to Rs 8.32 crore per annum and therefore total saving on account of energy consumption and line maintenance will be approximately Rs 85 crore per annum. Apart from this, the project will result in curbing Co2 emission by 65, 000 ton annually.

It may be noted that the SDMC has replaced around 2.80 lakh conventional lights till now. It has also been succeeded in turning most of the dark spots well lit in order to instill confidence of security among women. Besides, it has also put in place a state-of-the-art complaint management system for the citizens and all the complaints regarding faulty street light are addressed in less than 48 hours.
