Following the direction issued by lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal to combat air pollution, South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has taken steps to mitigate the crisis.

A senior SDMC official said that a number of measures have been taken to reduce the air pollution, including issuing a direction to Deputy Commissioners of all four zones, asking them confiscate diesel generators found running in the areas and to get in touch with the market associations in their respective zones and to ensure sprinkling of water in and around open spaces in the market places immediately on regular basis.

“The concerned officers in all the four zones have been told in clear words to concentrate on non-accumulation of the dust in the atmosphere and go all out against emission from the diesel propelled generator sets.  Further, they have also been told to submit reports on the daily basis," the official said.

The Commissioner SDMC, Puneet Kumar Goel expressed hope that the implementation of orders in true sense will go a long way in bringing substantial improvement in the level of air pollution and the resident will feel a sigh of relief as they will not have to face the effect of toxic particles in the air.

The official further said "The DHOs at all four zonal levels have also been directed to depute their field level workers in the sprinkling of water through the knapsacks on the roads and footpath in residential as well as market areas of their respective zones. Besides, the Director (Horticulture) has also been directed to deploy field staff for sprinkling of water in and around the parks, on roads and footpaths on regular basis,".
