SDMC dedicates two FCTS for West Zone

Published on:

South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Monday dedicated two fixed compactor transfer stations (FCTS) in the West Zone in a function organised by the SDMC at Tagore Garden. The project is compatible with solid waste management rules. The new system will cater to the waste generated in the families comprising of around 19 lakh people in 29 wards of West Zone. The 28 FCTS and other 20 “Mobile Transfer Systems” will be installed within three weeks.

The project lays great emphasis on segregation based on the three R Concepts — Reduce, Recycled and Reuse.  The implementation of the project results in the disposal of the almost full quantity of waste, resulting in the minimum leftover garbage to be dumped at the SlF site. The salient features of FCTS include primary collection of waste from the street level through auto tippers, transporting the waste in covered primary vehicles to the fixed compactor transfer station to mobile transfer stations (MTS).

SDMC Commissioner PK Goel while briefing about the project stated that the implementation is going to ensure primary and secondary collection of garbage side by side. He added that the new FCTS in the West Zone will bring a remarkable change as far as collection and disposal of garbage is concerned. “We will have in all 30 FCTS and 38 mobile compactors in the West Zone which will help in the disposal of the garbage being generated in the zone. Presently 807 MT ‘Municipal Solid Waste’ and 48 MT garbage are generated in the zone per day.

Delhi’s BJP president Manoj Tiwari, while appreciating the unique initiative of SDMC stated that the new FCTSs and other sanitation-related mechanical infrastructure would revolutionise segregation based disposal of almost full quality of waste.

Explaining the working of FCTS, a senior Corporation official said that the FCTS comprises of a bin, tipcart hydraulically operated loading shovel bucket, compressor and hook loader. “The collected garbage from the localities will be put into the bin with the capacity of around seven tone garbage in bin measuring ten and a half meter cubic area. The tipcarts bringing the garbage can bring two and halftone garbage putting it into the bin. The collected garbage in the bin will be hydraulically operated loading shovel bucket attach with the fixed compactor will transfer the garbage into the compactor for compressing it into short size,” he said.

He further said the compressed garbage will then be transferred into the hook loader with the capacity of ten tones compressed garbage. “The filled in hook will be sent to the Waste to Energy Plant Okhla.  The hook to also have a plastic container for keeping segregated waste. Once the hook is detached for taking the compressed garbage to the waste to energy plant another hook to be attached with the FCTS,” he added.
