The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has created a new record by collecting a huge sum of Rs 691crore as a property tax in the financial year 2017-18.

SDMC Commissioner, Dr Puneet Kumar Goel said that the collection of property tax in substantial amount resulted in executing developmental projects on large scale.  “The property tax forms major part of the entire revenue collection of SDMC.

He also added that the huge collection during just concluded financial year will help in the successful execution of developmental and public interest schemes and make the SDMC localities more advanced in terms of modern public amenities.

The Assessor and Collector, Rahul Garg said that the department during new financial year will focus on expanding the ambit of tax on the basis of the results of the ongoing survey.

An SDMC official said that the department of assessment and collection has succeeded in setting up a new record by reaching to a new height more than the determined target in the third year in a row. “This has become possible due to efforts of the relevant department and creating awareness among masses about the importance of paying tax before last date,” he said.

He further said that the amount collected is much more than that of the target (Rs. 650 crore) fix for the same year.

It may be recalled that the SDMC kept its offices open even on gazette holidays and on last Saturday for the convenience of the assesses and also gave a discount of 2  per cent on making payment on- line.  With the efforts, the civic body collected an amount of Rs 93 crore in last three days.
