Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay was elected as the member of Delhi Development Authority (DDA) by the Members of the House of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Thursday.

Upadhyay, who was also the Chairman of Standing Committee of the civic agency earlier, defeated Congress’s Satish Gupta by a margin of one vote. Out of 95 councillors, who participated in the voting, 48 voted for Upadhyay while remaining 47 voted for Gupta, a councillor from Deoli.

“Upadhyay is a development-oriented leader and DDA will benefit by his efficient leadership. Many public welfare schemes are pending in DDA and now Upadhyay will certainly contribute in their timely completion,” said SDMC Standing Committee Chairman Subhash Arya. Although the tenure of elected members is fixed for five years, the State BJP chief will serve the post for two years only. Once municipal election will take place, the civic body will elect a new member. “Being a member of the DDA, I will focus on execution of all pending projects. I will also emphasize on welfare schemes of the housing authority,” said Upadhyay.
