Sarita Vihar police post gets e-Malkhana

In order to digitise record keeping in Delhi Police Stations, Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik  on Friday launched the  first “digital Malkhana”  in Sarita Vihar Police Station of Southeast district. In fact,  the South East district is the first such district in the country to employ this technology.

“E-Malkhana is a mix of both software and process re-engineering solution using modern day inventory management system. The data of the case property is first entered in the E-Malkhana software. After which a picture of the object is uploaded alongside the diary entry number and the information is processed by the software. A unique barcode ID is generated by the software. The beta version of this upgrade is under test”, said Chinmoy Biswal the Deputy Commissioner of  Police (DCP) of South east district.

Terming it ‘revolutionary’ the E-Malkhana, Patnaik  lauded the efforts of  DCP, (South East) Chinmoy Biswal for implementing this technology in all the 13 police stations under him. He thanked Additional DCP Hareshwar Swami (who now has been transferred to Daman & Diu), the brains behind the digitalisation of  Malkhana. He also exhorted other districts across Delhi and the country to follow South East Delhi District model.

“Digitalising the Malkhanas will make the records easily available for a long time,” the Police Commissioner said.

Malkhana is a storage facility in police stations where case properties are kept for safe custody. Due to innumerable items being kept in the storage, the state of a Malkhana is usually not in an organised manner. However, with the introduction of the e-Malkhana software, items in the Malkhana can be kept safe, clean and undamaged.

Joint Commissioner of  Police (South eastern Range) Devesh Chandra Srivastava added “Earlier the Malkhana’s were dingy, smelly and in a haphazard state but now items are easily retrieved with just a click. We started registering the case properties in two phases. All the data was registered on the software.”

DCP (South East) Chinmoy Biswal said, “We decided to digitalise the Malkhana on March 2018. We have now digitalised all the 13 police station Malkhanas. The case properties were earlier in a state of neglect and were deteriorating over time.

New Friends Colony, lajpat Nagar and Kalkaji were selected to digitalise their Malkhana as a pilot project which began on December 2018, police added.
