Ruckus in House as Sharma loses cool, breaks mike

BJP MlA OP Sharma on Tuesday created a ruckus in the Delhi Assembly when he broke the mike at his table alleging that it had been turned off to prevent him from speaking. The Delhi Assembly witnessed heated argument between Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and BJP leaders over the issue of setting up of the campus of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University in East Delhi during the Question Hour.

Not satisfied with Sisodia’s reply regarding setting up colleges in East Delhi, BJP MlA OP Sharma accused the Deputy CM of misleading the House by claiming that BJP-led Government at the Centre is not allocating any money for setting up the IP University campus in Trans-Yamuna area.

The heated debate between the two took place during Question Hour when Sisodia was replying to a query of AAP MlA Nitin Tyagi over the number of colleges in East Delhi. As Sisodia claimed that the Centre had not released even a single penny for the Indraprashtha University in East Delhi, the BJP MlA took out photographs showing that the foundation stone for the same had already been laid.

Sharma pointed out that in the Union Government’s Budget Rs285 crore had been earmarked for the project. But Sisodia continued to claim during argument that these were all wrong facts as no money had been given for the university. Irked by Sisodia’s claims, the BJP MlA damaged his microphone, saying that the Vidhan Sabha official had deliberately switched it off so that he could not put his point of view.

Speaker Ram Niwas Goel said that Sharma should refrain from using words like “misleading” for any Minister. “By convention, it is presumed that any statement made by any Minister in the House is based on correct facts. If you do not agree with this, there are other forums where you can raise the issue.”

Sharma’s action did not go well with a large number of AAP MlAs who got up demanding strict action against Sharma for damaging the Government property. AAP MlA Somnath Bharati even demanded that the damages done by Sharma should be deducted from his salary.
