The static surveillance team of Delhi Electoral office on Sunday recovered Rs 3,21,080 from a car which was stationed at North Delhi’s Roop Nagar area on Saturday evening. The person driving the car was identified as Rajesh Arora and the money in the denomination of 10, 20 and 50, was kept in various envelopes.
The money was recovered by a joint team of officers consisting of revenue officers, enforcement, income tax, excise and an intelligence unit. The job of the team is to look for those involved in the violation of the Model Code of Conduct during the run up to the polls. According to police, the incident took place on Saturday evening. A routine traffic check was being carried out at Nangia Park. A Mahindra XUV 500 bearing number Dl-2CQ-7913 was intercepted when it tried to speed past the checkpost. The car bore the AAP sticker. Rajesh Arora claimed he was not a candidate but an AAP loyalist. Police also recovered five brooms from the car. It may be noted that broom is the official symbol of the Aam Aadmi Party.
“We have seized the car and the cash. According to the Model Code of Conduct issued by the EC, no individual is authorised to carry cash more than Rs 50,000. The owner has been arrested,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North district) Sindhu Pillai. In the interrogation, neither a valid reason for carrying cash was given nor did he provide any bank document which could justify the amount withdrawn. A case under Section 188 of IPC was registered at the Roop Nagar Police Station.
