Gurugram police has written to the banks in the city asking them to install CCTV cameras inside and outside ATM booths and make them functional to check the rise in ATM related crimes in the city.

The city police was forced to issue directions to banks after it was found that a number of ATM related crimes could not be investigated properly due to the unavailability of CCTV footage to the police.

Manish Sehgal, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), said the issuer has been taken up with the banks as there is immediate need to boost the security and surveillance at these installations. There are over 1,000 ATMs in the city, Sehgal added.

“We can’t secure every ATM and it is important that banks post a security guard and install cameras that can record at least data of three months,” Sehgal said.

There were over 130 cases of ATM related frauds and cheating reported in Gurugram in 2016, and the number has already touched 52 in the first three months of this year.

Online frauds have also seen a rise this year as compared to past, and this is the reason that Gurugram police cyber cell does not want to take any chance. Police also said that CCTV footage not only helps in investigation but it also prevents crimes as fraudsters are wary of getting caught on camera. Inspector Anand Yadav, the in-charge of the Cyber Cell has also asked banks to ensure that steps are taken to safeguard the customers.
