Elated over the decision to withdraw four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP), students’ and teachers’ unions protesting against the new course on Friday also sought resignation of the Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Dinesh Singh.
As soon as the news of DU’s compliance to the UGC’s directive came, students were seen bursting firecrackers, dancing to drum beats, raising slogans and hugging each other.
“Our leaders, activists and student volunteers have held number of protest rallies, staged many dharnas in the campus, and also sat on indefinite hunger strikes which lasted for around five days. All our tireless efforts have paid off,” said Amrish Ranjan Pandey, spokesperson, National Students’ Union of India (NSUI).
Members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) were the most elated with the decision and took to streets with colour and firecrackers. Many of them were also seen outside the V-C’s residence burning his effigies and shouting celebratory slogans. National Secretary Rohit Chahal said, “After a long fight we have finally succeeded in attaining what we wanted. It is a big victory for the students of DU.”
DUTA president Nandita Narain said, “This is a big victory for all of us because we have been fighting for this from the beginning and this brings an end to students’ misery.”
