Residents told to remove illegal construction under transmission lines

Unauthorised constructions under transmission lines are not only creating problem in smooth wheeling of power in Delhi but also in maintaining these lines for ensuring uninterrupted electricity, said the Delhi Transco limited (DTl) in a statement.

The DTl appealed to the residents to remove the unauthorised structures in the vicinity and under the high voltage transmission lines for the safety of their lives and properties as well as for smooth supply of electricity.

Over the years people have encroached upon the land and built up their houses and other structures just beneath and around the transmission lines violating the statutory clearances, a senior DTl official said.

It is not only an obstacle in smooth transmission of power but is also hazardous for the people living there. Whenever any object come in contact with the line it get tripped and the supply to the residents and also essential services like hospital, water supply and Delhi Metro get affected till it is restored through alternative transmission routes, he said.

The official further said that a number of such incidents occur every year where the transmission of power is disrupted owing to the unauthorized constructions in the vicinity of transmission lines.  The problem aggregates in summers when sag of conductor increases with rise in load and temperature. Such unauthorised constructions also run the risk of bringing people close to high voltage line which can endanger their lives, he added.

As per the Central Electricity Authority regulations no building should be constructed under the existing lines. Besides maintaining clear horizontal and vertical distances, a 35 metre right of way is required for 220 KV transmission line (17.5 meter each side of transmission line) and it is 52 metre for 400KV line (26 metre each side).
