Refusal to wed NRI lover lands Govt official in jail

A Delhi Transport Department official was arrested for alleged rape from South-West’s Delhi’s Dwarka over his sexual relations with a non-resident Indian (NRI) which was based on a promise of marriage.

The victim is currently settled in Australia.

She claimed that she and the suspect had intimate relations on several occasions in India and Australia, police said on Thursday.

Police said that the accused has been identified as Ram Narendra Sharma alias Tittu. He is posted with the Transport Department as a constable. “Sharma was arrested on Wednesday from his house at Palam,” a senior police officer said.

The woman is separated from her husband, who lives in New Zealand. She was married sixteen years ago in Haryana’s Sonepat.

She gave a complaint against Sharma, whom she knew for the last two years as a friend of her husband’s, to police on March 9, the officer said.

“In the complaint, the victim said that Sharma accompanied her to New Zealand, Singapore, Australia and Jaipur where the two had physical relations on several occasions. But when she insisted that they get married, the man turned her down,” the officer added.

On March 6, the victim arrived in Delhi from Australia and was staying in a hotel in Dwarka. She came to India to convince Sharma for marriage as he had been ignoring her for the past three months.

She also claimed that she was allegedly beaten up by the accused at her hotel when she asked him to fulfill his ‘promise’. He also attempted to rape her and threatened her with dire consequences if she informed anyone about the matter. Based on her statement, a case under Sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) was registered at Dwarka (South) police station.

In a separate incident, 28-year-old, Manish, an employee of a Telecom company, was arrested from South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar after he went back on his promise to marry a girl with whom he had sexual relations.
