A 35-year-old man barged into the residence of his in-laws and stabbed four members of the family, including his wife, which led to the death of his mother-in-law and critically injured the other three. The incident took place in South-West Delhi’s Sagar Pur area on Monday afternoon.

According to police, the incident took place around 3 pm near Tent School in Sagar Pur area. The accused person, identified as Bhupendra, entered his in-laws’ residence. He locked up his father-in law, who is bedridden and his younger brother-in-law’s wife in a room. His wife Poonam, mother-in-law Kaushalya and two brothers-in-law Pankaj and Ankur were present in the house during the time of the incident.

Bhupendra has been having strained relations with his wife for sometime now. Due to this, his wife had stopped staying with him and was living with her family. Bhupendra was upset over this and was forcing her to come back. On Monday, he went to her residence and asked her to come away with him.

A heated argument broke out between the two. His mother-in-law intervened. Irate, he stabbed his mother-in-law and his wife multiple times. His two brothers-in-law who came to save them too were stabbed by him. Bhupendra immediately left the spot and fled. He locked the house from outside before escaping. When the neighbours went to check in on the family and found them lying in a pool of blood, they alerted police. The family was rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital where Kaushalya was pronounced dead on arrival. Pankaj is stated to be out of danger and the other two are currently undergoing treatment.

“Though the exact motive is not clear, prima facie it appears Bhupendra was unhappy about his wife walking out on him. A case of murder and attempt to murder has been registered. Further investigations are underway,” said a police official. Bhupendra resides in Naraina area along with his two children and is married to Poonam for a decade now. He worked as a bouncer in a pub — a job he had quit sometime back.
