A 16-year-old boy and his grandfather were killed when their scooter was hit by a speeding SUV that had jumped the red light in East Delhi’s Anand Vihar area on Monday morning. The deceased have been identified as Rishabh (16) and his 65-year-old grandfather Sulekh Chand. The SUV’s driver, however, abandoned his vehicle and fled from the spot soon after the incident. According to police, the incident took place around 10.30 am when Sulekh Chand and his minor grandson were returning home to Krishna Nagar from a relative’s place.

“As they neared Ashoka Niketan and were crossing a traffic signal, their scooter was rear-ended by a speeding Toyota Fortuner. Both were thrown off the scooter and dragged several metres by the SUV,” said a police official. After a PCR call was made, the victims were rushed to a hospital nearby where Rishabh was pronounced dead on arrival while Chand succumbed to his injuries during treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU). Police have seized the vehicle and launched a manhunt to nab the SUV’s driver. A case has been registered at Anand Vihar police station. Police have also recovered the CCTV footage in the hope it offers them clues about the rogue driver.
