A 45-year-old property dealer was allegedly battered to death in front of his wife by a group of five to six people over a longstanding family dispute in southwest Delhi's Chhawla on Friday morning.

Police said, on Friday around 6 am the couple was out on a morning walk, when the assailants arrived in two cars and allegedly waylaid them, pushed the property dealer on the ground and attacked him with iron rods and blunt objects. A senior police officer said the attackers included members of the property dealer's extended family with whom his immediate family was not on talking terms for the past couple of years.

The assailants attacked him so brutally that his head and face got crushed beyond recognition. The property dealer was identified as Ramesh Kumar and he lived with his family in Nanak Heri Village. Kumar ran a real estate office in Gurgaon besides owning agricultural lands in his village.

On seeing Kumar being mercilessly attacked, his wife ran towards home and alerted her family members and neighbours. By the time they reached the crime scene, the attackers had fled, leaving behind Kumar bleeding profusely. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

"A case of murder has been registered at the Chhawla Police Station and two persons, identified as Jai Prakash and Aman, have been arrested. The two are cousins of Kumar. Efforts are on to nab other attackers who we have already identified," said Surender Kumar, DCP (southwest). On being asked about the reason behind Kumar's murder, the DCP said their preliminary investigation suggested it to be a case of revenge killing, though both the rival groups belong to the same family.
