Real estate citadel of Govt worker, wife crumbles under fraud weight

A Delhi Government employee has been arrested along with his wife for duping several people on the pretext of selling properties at prime locations. The couple is involved in nine criminal cases and they were arrested from Central Delhi’s Rajinder Nagar on charges of duping a public school teacher up to the tune of Rs 28 lakh. The District Investigation Unit (DIU) of Central district found that the teacher was conned by Sanjay Kumar, who was working as a Statistical Assistant with the Food and Civil Supplies Department and his wife Jyoti Kumar, as they ‘sold’ him property giving forged documents.

Police said that the accused were involved in nine cases of cheating and some property dealers were also involved with them. “The arrest was made on Monday evening following a complaint lodged by Sunita Vohra (38), who stays with her husband in New Friends Colony and works at Mater Dei School in Tilak Marg. A case under relevant sections of IPC was registered at Rajinder Nagar Police Station of Central Delhi,” the officer added.

Sunita told police that she was looking for a house when she and her husband Vinod Vohra approached one property dealer — Saurabh Avasthi — who in turn informed them there was one seller — Sanjay Kumar and Jyoti Kumar in Old Rajinder Nagar — who wanted to sell their three-storey-building. “The complainants agreed after seeing the property and then asked them to show the property papers. The accused persons claimed that they have photocopies of the lease deed which showed that Jyoti was owner of the property. After receiving the property papers, the victims paid Rs 28 lakh to the accused and asked them to show the original papers of the property,” a police official said. However, after receiving the payment, the accused started avoiding their phone calls.

The victims later approached Avasthi who informed them that owner of the property was one Gian Chand, who has died. After his death, his legal heir had sold the property to some other person, who further sold it to Ajay Sharma. And, the Kumar couple was not the owners of the property. “After scrutinising the documents, the victims learnt that all the documents were forged,” the officer added.
