A PhD student of Jawaharlal Nehru University accused of raping a Delhi University girl, in his hostel room has been suspended for 10 years. The accused Jaiprakash, who stayed at Brahmaputra Hostel, had allegedly raped the DU girl in his room on October 2012.
While an FIR was registered against him at Vasant Vihar police station, an inquiry was also conducted by the university administration following which the Chief Proctor decided to suspend him for 10 years. The incident took place on the night of October 4, 2012 when the girl accompanied the accused to JNU. The boy had allegedly intoxicated the girl by adding sedatives in her drink and raped her. The accused was pursuing PhD at the School of languages.
After the incident, several student groups had tried to bury the issue initially by asking the girl that not to approach the police. However, the girl finally went ahead and lodged a complaint a couple of days later. The FIR was registered after her medical examination confirmed rape. The university, as a disciplinary measure, had constituted a special committee to launch an extensive inquiry into the matter. Reacting strongly on the issue, the vice-chancellor had also suspended the boy with immediate effect. The committee headed by Prof Shyamal Goswami also included the warden of Brahmaputra Hostel and Ganga Hostel.
Earlier, two pornographic MMS cases — first at Tapti and then at Narmada Hostel — in the university had also rocked the institution. After the MMS scandals surfaced in JNU, the authorities were quick to tighten the security, especially check the visitors’ entry and exit from the campus. No visitors were allowed inside the university without a written log and the security staff confirming with the corresponding person in JNU, whom the visitor claims to meet. Entry of female students in boys’ hostels, especially at night, had also been strictly prohibited and regular checks were maintained. However, it was surprising as to how the accused managed to take the girl along with him to his room.
