Delhi’s Women and Child Development Minister Rakhi Birla was attacked by unknown miscreants in Outer Delhi’s Mangolpuri area on Sunday evening. Birla escaped unhurt but her car was damaged after a blunt object was reportedly thrown at her while she was talking to the area residents on Sunday evening.

The incident took place at R Block in Mangolpuri, which is also her Assembly constituency. Police officials said that the front windscreen was damaged and the matter is being investigated after a complaint was filed by the Minister. She was sitting in the front seat of her WagonR car when some people threw a heavy object at the vehicle damaging the windscreen. However, Birla said that she was not deterred by the incident and reiterated that she would not take security. As part of his party’s promise to follow austerity, Kejriwal has been refusing to take any security and all his six Ministers have also said that they will follow their leader’s footsteps and not take personal security.

According to the police, the incident took place around 6 pm when Birla had stopped to speak to the residents at R Block in the area. Birla’s driver and the people accompanying her were seated inside the car along with her. When she rolled down the window of her car to speak to the residents, suddenly, a heavy object was thrown at her car which cracked the windscreen. “No one was injured in the incident. We have received a complaint and are investigating. A complaint was filed by the Minister,” said a police official.

The object by which the windscreen cracked was not noticed by any of the passerby and nor did anyone pause to check what it was. However, police claimed the car was hit by a cricket ball as some children were playing nearby. Police said senior officers were looking into the matter to decide on registering an FIR. It may be noted that Birla has been making surprise checks at various Government-run shelters ever since she took charge as a Minister.
