Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday made several surprise visits to offices of the municipal corporations in the national Capital to check the status of cleanliness and the problems being faced by the common man. The Home Minister also visited two police stations of Delhi Police and was more or less satisfied with the general upkeep and the atmosphere of work.
The Home Minister reportedly ticked off Deputy Commissioner (DC) of City Zone of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) for shabby office premises and lack of work culture. Even the DC was not present in his office when Home Minister arrived for sudden inspection. He also conducted surprise checks at various public places, including hospitals and railway stations, to take stock of cleanliness and other problems faced by the people there.
The Home Minister was accompanied by lG Najeeb Jung, Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi and Chief Secretary DM Spolia. Singh inspected a toilet at New Delhi Railway Station to see its cleanliness and then moved towards Shivaji Stadium bus stop to enquire about passengers’ convenience, frequency of buses and Paharganj police station to get a first-hand knowledge about complaints and cleanliness in lockups.
“I am visiting these places to personally see what is happening in these places and assess the overall situation in the city. I am satisfied with the working of some places while in some places there is a need for improvement of services,” the Home Minister said. He was visibly unhappy about the cleanliness in Sulabh toilet in Paharganj and directed the in-charge to do the needful for its improvement. He interacted with passengers at the bus stop and coolies and taxi drivers at railway stations.
During his visit to the Municipal Corporation’s city zone office at Asaf Ali Marg, Singh found the DC Hemendra Kumar missing from his office. Though the DC arrived later, the Home Minister expressed his displeasure over uncleanliness in the office, employees “lack of interest” in keeping documents in order. The Home Minister also directed DC Hemendra Kumar to take urgent steps for cleanliness, remove unused articles like computers and improve people’s facilities and service.
“Today, I realised why people are unhappy with MCD,” Singh later told Jung. However, Singh expressed his satisfaction over the cleanliness and patients’ facilities at lNJP Hospital and told the Medical Superintendent that whatever necessary assistance is required will be provided to further improve the services. The Home Minster also visited a slum cluster at Mir Dard Road and enquired from the residents about the problems and directed accompanying officials, including Chief Secretary Deepak Spolia, to improve their living conditions.
