Rain ties traffic up on Rakhi

After a week-long lull, the national Capital on Sunday witnessed heavy rain. Widespread rain lashed the city keeping the mercury below normal levels, though citizens had a tough day due to waterlogged roads and major traffic snarls. However, the rains could not dampen the spirit of Delhiites as they celebrated Raksha Bandhan with much fervour and colour, reaffirming the unique sibling bond in India.

Meanwhile, according to the MeT, the Safdarjung observatory recorded 76.5 mm rainfall while areas under Palam, Ridge and Ayanagar observatories received 47.4 mm, 52 mm and 57 mm of rainfall respectively. Traffic bottlenecks were witnessed on Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, ITO, stretches between lajpat Nagar and AIIMS, Dhaula Kuan and Naraina, GPO near Red Fort, Wazirpur and Azadpur, Chirag Dilli to BRT corridor, MB Road to Khanpur, Harkesh Nagar to Modi Meel, Mangolpuri Chowk, and Connaught Place.

However, after the downpour, extremely muggy weather conditions persisted as humidity levels were recorded between 72 per cent and 90 per cent causing much discomfort. Sunday’s maximum temperature was recorded at 32.5°C, a notch below normal for this time of the year, while the minimum settled at 27.7°C, a notch above normal.

On Monday, the MeT Department said, “It will be a generally cloudy day. Rain and thundershowers would occur in some areas tomorrow. The maximum and minimum temperature is likely to be around 33°C and 27°C respectively.”
