Cong to also pass resolution on racism at Talkatora

In a bid to target first-time voters for the coming lok Sabha elections, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will address a youth convention organised by National Students Union of India (NSUI) at Talkatora Stadium on March 6 and 7. Sources in the Congress said that the party will pass a resolution on racial discrimination in the convention. Recent census has shown that around 40 per cent population in the country constitute of young below the age of 35 years. Sources claimed that PM Manmohan Singh is also expected to address this crucial summit at the Talkatora Stadium.

According sources, Congress leaders are working overtime to bring thousands of youth and students falling under 18 to 25 years age bracket at the Talkatora Stadium. Congress leaders said in the convention Rahul Gandhi will have direct dialogue with the youth just ahead of crucial lok Sabha polls. Besides other issues, racial discrimination will be an important issue of discussion at this meet. As per voters’ list by January 31, 2014, there are 2.26 lakh youth who would exercise their vote first time in Delhi. Besides, there are 13 to 18 lakh voters between the age of 21 and 25. The youth voters are going to play a major in the elections.

Racial discrimination against youth will be a key agenda of the convention. It may be noted that Delhi Congress had firmly raised the issue of racial discrimination against former Minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Somnath Bharti. Congress leaders alleged that cases of discrimination and violence against North-East students have increased after Somnath Bharti’s alleged discriminatory behaviour against Ugandan women.
