PWD says two-wheeler riders cause traffic jams

Published on:

The Public Works Department (PWD) of Delhi Government has come out with a novel idea to decongest Capital's roads during monsoon season. They have now suggested that all the bikers and two-wheeler riders must carry a raincoat with them to avoid standing below flyovers, underpasses and bus stands during rain.

During monsoon, it is common to see two-wheelers blocking main carriageway below flyovers and underpasses. This is one the reasons for traffic snarls across the city. The Delhi Government had earlier written to the city's traffic Police department to prevent this practice. PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan told The Pioneer that traffic police should issue advisory to all two-wheeler riders to carry a raincoat with them during monsoon and they should not be allowed to take shelter under flyovers, underpasses, bus stands or foot-over bridges as this "selfish" practice by them causes inconveniences to lakhs of other motorists.

"The Delhi Traffic Police should also augment its deployment at major intersections to meet any exigency arising out of the traffic lights not working during the rainy season," said Chauhan. Additional Commissioner of Traffic Police Anil Shukla said that they cannot force people to leave. "Traffic Policemen on duty try to regulate those on two-wheelers. Those on two-wheelers are asked to stand in a manner so that the main carriageway is not blocked. As for carrying rain coats is concerned, it was entirely up to them," Shukla added.
