In the North-East Parliamentary constituency, the Purvanchalis and migrant voters essentially sealed the victory of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Manoj Tiwari.
The dominance of Muslims in the constituency had virtually no impact on the BJP candidate who won the seat comfortably with a margin of 1,44,084 votes. Trends emerging from the beginning clearly indicated BJP’s victory. Vote bank from the Muslim dominated constituency, which was also in favour of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), could now do much damage to the BJP. However the migrants from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and the workingclass turned the tables in favour of Tiwari.
From the very beginning Congress candidate from the area, Jai Prakash Aggarwal was nowhere in the fight despite being a sitting Member of Parliament from there. The Modi wave and the support of the youths catapulted Bhojpuri film icon Manoj Tiwari to the lok Sabha. Tiwari, despite being an outsider and a political novice, managed to win from the North-East Delhi seat riding on the support of the Purvanchalis and the traditional voters of the BJP. The analysis of the trend indicates that the AAP made a sizeable dent in the minority votes and in the process pushed Congress to a poor third.
Tiwari, who was present at the counting centre from morning looked visibly upbeat and was confident about his stance in the constituency. He came and sang songs for the public and his supporters. The celebrations had begun from the afternoon itself as the supporters burst crackers outside the counting centres and his car was decked up with flowers.
