Protests resound outside Karkardooma court

Heavy security arrangement in and around Karkardooma court, where hearing on quantum of sentence in 1984 Sikh riots case was going on — prevented protesters from indulging in violence on Thursday.

However they regrouped and lodged a massive demonstration outside court premises. Relatives of victims who were affected in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots were visibly disappointed with the verdict and expressed grief over Sajjan Kumar’s acquittal.

Hundreds staged a protest on Thursday afternoon outside Karkardooma court. They demanded justice and death penalty for all convicts in 1984 riots case.

Sikh protesters have been on the city roads since the acquittal of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar. The court had convicted five accused and let off Kumar on April 30.

Protesters removed their shoes and started beating them on the ground and shouted slogans — “law is blind and partial”.

“They have given them life imprisonment which is nothing compared to the kind of crime they have done. The accused should be hanged seven times. I am unhappy with the judgement and will appeal to the High Court. I will fight for justice. It is an incomplete and an inappropriate judgement for me. There are two sets of laws being followed in the country. There is no justice for Sikhs” said eyewitness and riot victim Jagdish Kaur.

“We have been made a mockery. This sort of judgement will not only harm the Sikhs now but also affect the next generation. The coming Sikh generation will not feel that they are a part of this country. The total case should be re opened and three judges should be appointed and a fast trial court should be set up.  We will not get justice until political orchestrated drama is stopped and everyone comes together keeping aside the politics and fight simply for justice” said Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad.
