Students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) staged a protest outside the Delhi Police Headquarters on Friday, questioning the department on the whereabouts of Najeeb Ahmad, a student of the university who has been missing from the campus for two weeks.
An MSc student, Ahmad went missing since October 15 morning after a brawl allegedly with ABVP activists. Since then Ahmad’s family and the JNU administration have both made appeals to police to speed up the enquiry into the case.
"Find out who lynched NajeebIJ" was written on one of the placards, while another by the Students’ Islamic Organisation of India (SOI) that joined the protest with the JNUSU said, "Why JNU vehicle entry record and metro footage are not being examined"IJ Human Rights activist Gautamn Navlakha said, "As days are passing with no clues of Ahmad, fears of something worse having happened to him arise…The V-C has not shown any legitimacy of the decisions he has made so far…police must answer that what have they done and how they are going about the caseIJ"
As students shouted slogans to "fight to bring back Ahmad", his family also arrived at ITO, asking the administration to take action against those who attacked him in the night. However, they claimed that the administration has not taken any such steps, stating that action would be taken against the guilty only after the proctoral enquiry is completed.
Also, the JNUSU and JNUTA took exception to the "terminology" used by the JNU administration in referring to the missing student in its statements.
Earlier, students organisations, including NSUI, had sumbitted a memorandum to President Pranab Mukherjee and lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung to expedite the investigation.
A senior Delhi Police officer, involved in the probe told The Pioneer that they were not leaving any stone unturned. The investigation was at a crucial stage and several police teams were on the job, he said.
The protest brought the traffic on the busy crossroads at ITO to a complete halt.
