The Delhi Mayor, Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh, has appealed to all property owners to take advantage of the Property Tax Amnesty Scheme 2025-26, which has now been extended till December 31, 2025. The Sumpattikar Niptaan Yojana (Suniyo) scheme offers taxpayers a rare opportunity to clear old property tax dues without penalties or interest.
Under the scheme, taxpayers can obtain a waiver on property tax, interest, and penalties for periods prior to the FY 2020–21. To avail of the benefit, property owners need to pay the principal amount of property tax for the current financial year (2025–26) and the previous five years from 2020–25 .
Originally launched on June 1, 2025, the scheme was scheduled to end on September 30 but has been extended by three months. However, taxpayers availing the scheme during this period will need to pay a 2 per cent late fee on the principal amount of tax calculated under the scheme.
“This is a golden opportunity for citizens to settle their outstanding property tax dues without paying any penalties or interest,” the Delhi mayor said in his appeal. “I urge all property owners and occupiers in Delhi to make full use of the extended deadline under SUNIYO and contribute to the city’s growth by becoming tax-compliant.”
The response to the scheme so far has been encouraging. According to data shared by the mayor’s office, over 1.29 lakh taxpayers have already availed themselves of the benefits of the scheme and deposited ?519 crore in property tax payments up to September 30, 2025.
Notably, 66,000 of these taxpayers are first-time payers, who cleared their dues under SUNIYO for the first time. The total tax collected from these new taxpayers alone stands at around ?200 crore, reflecting a growing culture of compliance and civic participation.
Overall, Delhi’s property tax collection has seen a substantial rise this year. As of September 30, 2025, total tax collection for the current financial year (including SUNIYO payments) has reached ?2,270 crore from 11.79 lakh taxpayers. This marks a 30.7% increase in tax revenue and a 19% rise in the number of taxpayers compared to the same period last year, when the civic body collected ?1,736 crore from 9.9 lakh taxpayers.
In comparison, the total property tax collection for the entire FY 2024–25 was ?2,132.29 crore from 11.33 lakh taxpayers, significantly less than what has already been achieved halfway through the current financial year.
Officials said the sharp improvement in revenue reflects growing public confidence in the tax system and the success of citizen-friendly initiatives like SUNIYO. The scheme, they added, is helping Delhi recover pending dues while encouraging long-term compliance by easing the burden on taxpayers.
The mayor emphasised that the SUNIYO scheme is part of a broader effort to improve civic finances and strengthen urban infrastructure. “Higher tax compliance means better services for citizens, from roads to sanitation and public facilities,” he said.
With six months still remaining in the financial year, officials expect property tax recovery to cross all previous records. The civic body plans to intensify awareness campaigns in the coming weeks to ensure more citizens benefit from the extended window.
