Providing substantial relief to the property tax assesses, the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP)-ruled East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has extended the last date for availing an amnesty scheme for payment of property tax to the end of March.

A senior EDMC official said that the amnesty scheme has been extended till the end of March for property owners in east Delhi. It was to be effective till February 28 earlier,” a senior EDMC official said.

Under the amnesty scheme, property owners in the city will not have to pay interest and penalty if they clear pending dues of the tax.

“For east Delhi, areas in focus are the unauthorised colonies and unauthorised regularised colonies where people do not pay property taxes.

Idea is to make this scheme serve as an incentive to bring them under the tax net,” the official said.

The other two corporations, the North and South Corporations had already announced a similar scheme earlier.

For property owners in north Delhi, the scheme will cover defaulters who have not filed property tax since April 2004, officials said.

A senior SDMC official said that some of the major areas which remain out of tax net are rural urban areas and urban village, adding that with the move the corporation aims to bring more properties under the tax net to augment the corporation’s income.

Elaborating it further, the official said that under this scheme all property holders will become entitled for 100 per cent waiver of the amount relating to interest, penalty and other charges on making up-to-date payment of outstanding dues by 31st March, 2019.

“The  assesses will be benefited with waiver of interest, penalty and other charges amount on payment of their due amount of property tax by 31st

March 2019. This scheme will also be applicable to the property tax assesses in villages and unauthorised colonies,” he said.

“This scheme is applicable to all those who have been avoiding payment of property tax because of hefty amount of interest and penalty, hence they will also be benefitted with scheme,” he added.

The corporations have been announcing similar schemes every year close to the end of a financial year.
