NMC to hike parking rates from Nov 1

The North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Friday hiked its parking rates. Basic charges for four-wheelers and two-wheelers have been pegged at Rs 20 and Rs 10 per hour respectively. The rates have been revised to regulate parking in the Capital. With every passing year, the number of vehicles has doubled leading to traffic congestion, encroachment, delays, pollution, road rage and accidents. The hiked rates will be implemented from November 1.

The proposal to hike the parking rates was always on the cards after the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) had increased its rates some weeks back.

According an official statement from NMC, the parking charges for four-wheeler and two-wheeler vehicles will be Rs 20 and Rs 10 for an hour. Beyond five hours, four-wheelers will be charged Rs 10 per hour, which will escalate to a maximum of Rs 50. For two-wheelers, the amount will go up to a maximum of Rs 25. Up to 10 hours, four-wheelers will be charged Rs 100 (Rs 10 per hour) whereas two-wheelers will have to pay Rs 50 (Rs 5 per hour) for the same period. For parking four-wheelers beyond 10 hours, parking rates will surge to Rs 200 as against Rs 50 previously. Two-wheelers will have to pay Rs 100 for 24-hour parking. The monthly cost for parking four-wheelers will go up to Rs 1,500 and Rs 500 for two-wheelers.

For parking during peak hours, the charges would be an additional 50 per cent of the designated charges. The enhancement of parking charges will be simultaneously accompanied with stricter enforcement of rules of parking contractors. This includes proper demarcation or marking of boundaries of the existing parking lots, installation of appropriate signages displaying the parking rates and issue of computerised receipt by the parking contractors showing the amount of parking charges collected as well as the time of entry and exit of vehicles.

The parking rates of tempos and buses etc have not been considered for revision by the Special Task Force (STF), but are required to be increased in the wake of wholesale markets and areas under NMC. Under the proposed rate chart, tempos would be charged Rs 60 for two-hour parking, which will surge to Rs 90 for five hours. For five to ten hours, tempos would be charged Rs 200 and Rs 300 for 24-hour parking. Monthly charges will go up to Rs 6,000. Buses, trucks and other equivalents will be charged Rs 80 for two-hour parking, Rs 120 for up to five hours and Rs 300 for parking between five to ten hours. For a 24-hour parking, buses will be charged Rs 500 and the monthly rate will go up to Rs 9,900.

Moreover, it is also proposed to remove the differential rates in premium and normal parking as the same rates will now apply to all surface and multi-level parking lots under the jurisdiction of NMC.
