Pricey onion may get cheap around Diwali

Published on:

Onion, one of the most essential ingredients of every household, touched Rs 100 mark in the national Capital on Wednesday. Wholesale dealers claimed that the prices may decrease around Deepawali.

Meanwhile, onion price went down by Rs 2-5 per kg. "On Wednesday, onion was sold at Rs 53-58 per kilo and it is expected to plunge further in coming days," said Rajender Sharma, chairperson of Asia's largest fruit and vegetable market at Azadpur Mandi.

Contrary to slight dip in wholesale rate, onion was sold at season's peak rate — Rs 100 per kg in some localities of South Delhi, Central Delhi and West Delhi.

"It seems the Government is sleeping and not doing anything about the rising prices which is burning a deep hole in the pocket of the common man," said Alka Choudhary, a resident of Paschim Vihar (West Delhi).
