In the wake of soaring essential vegetables and tomatoes in the national Capital, Delhi BJP president Manoj Tiwari has written to lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal and requested to convene a meeting of the senior officers of 'Food and Supply Department' in order to address the crisis.
Tiwari said the official of the department should be directed to ensure proper supply of onion and tomatoes at fair price in Delhi apart from keeping watch on the availability of seasonal vegetables. “The department should also ensure that there is no hoarding of vegetables especially onions,” he said.
Expressing grave concern over prices, he said that this is the result of the negligence of Delhi Government. “During the winter season, onion and tomatoes supplies come from the Southern States and this year their crop has been destroyed due to heavy rain in those States. Despite being aware of this fact the supply department made no arrangements for the supply of the production as a result tomatoes are being sold at the rate of `60 to `80 per kg and onions at the rate of `40 to `50 per kg in Delhi.
He further said that even the winter vegetable Green Peas are being sold at the rate of `100 to `125 per kg and Cauliflower at the rate of `40 to `60 per kg.
“During the previous year, the Delhi Government accused of bungling in the supply of Onion and this year in spite of knowing this fact no arrangements were made which shows the apathy of the Government,” he said.
