Prepare for 'dry days' as canal fault hits WTPs

Published on:

Water supply in East, South and South-West Delhi will be severely affected for a day or two due to a fault in the Upper Ganga Canal in UP. This breach in the canal has affected the production of water in Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) located at Sonia Vihar and Bhagirathi.

“Parts of the Upper Ganga Canal of Uttar Pradesh near Khatoli have broken. Because of which raw water supply to the WTPs will be curtailed. Hence, it will affect water supply in areas under it until the breach is repaired,” said a DJB official. The canal which is under the control of the UP Irrigation Department has taken up its repair work, officials said. These two WTPs supply water to several colonies of east and south Delhi including Greater Kailash, lajpat Nagar, South Extension, Mayur Vihar, Preet Vihar, Anand Vihar, Gandhi Nagar and Hauz Khas.

“The UP Irrigation Department has assured the DJB that the repairs will be carried out on war footing and the breach will be closed in a short span of time. We expect it to be repaired maximum within 72 hours,” said a DJB official.
