Following the intervention of the Delhi Government, power supply to streetlights in North and North-West Delhi was restored by the power distribution company -- Tata Power Delhi Distribution limited (TPDDl) -- on Thursday night after three days.
The TPDDl officials said power was restored after the Government assured that the matter of non-payment of dues will be taken up with the Corporation. On Monday, the power company snapped power to streetlights on six stretches in North Delhi Corporation area and a day later, supply was discontinued to 45,000 street poles as the civic body could not recover electricity charges.
The spokesperson of the TPDDl Ajay Maharaj said: "The decision was taken after the Power Ministry of the Delhi Government intervened in the matter. We have also received a letter of request from the municipal corporation to restore power supply. Taking into account the issue of public safety, power was restored to the streetlights. The Delhi Government has also assured the power discom to take up the matter with the corporation and get the dues cleared".
Meanwhile the civic body is planning to move court against the distribution company over the issue. leader of House in North Corporation Mahender Nagpal said: "The corporation would approach the court next week. The power discom is raising the bills for power being supplied to the streetlights and parks at commercial rate. Corporation is not earning anything from the power being drawn for the streetlights. Streetlights are public utility service, then why is the power discom charging the corporation at commercial rate," he added.
