Pollution levels in Delhi's air dip

Published on:

Delhi’s air quality has registered an improvement as the pollutants in the air have shown decline. Just three days before the implementation odd-even numbers scheme in the city, National Air quality Index (NAQI) has showed substantial reduction of the mass concentration of primary pollutant in the Capital air. Surprisingly, Particulate Matter 2.5 was observed lower than its prescribed standards in some areas of Delhi.

On Tuesday at 5 pm in Mandir Marg area, the concentration of PM 2.5 was 51µg/m3 which is nine points less than of its prescribed standards of Indian Metrological standards (IMD). And PM10 was 155µg/m3, a few points above of the prescribed standards.

RK Vishav, Group Captain, Delhi Division, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the dip in pollution is due to wind pattern, “Direction and wind speed, both are responsible for settling down the primary particle of Delhi air, “this week, wind directions are at 230-270 degree in south-west direction,” said the Group Captain while observing the wind pattern on Satellite Ground Positioning system (SGPS).

“It is expected that mass concentrations of pollutants in city air will remain partially low till first week of New Year,” he said.

Meanwhile, in the last week of this year, System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), Ministry of Earth Science (MoES) has showed the mass concentrations of PM 10 219.7 µg/m3 and PM2.5 was 134.µg/m3.

The air monitoring stations of Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) have shown considerable levels of PMs.

Mass concentrations of PMs in Punjabi Bagh and Anad Vihar areas also reduced. At 7 pm, concentration of both matters was 156µg/m3 (PM 10), 94µg/m3 (PM2.5) and 382µg/m3(PM10) ,104µg/m3 (PM 2.5) respectively in both area while both areas were considered toxic zones in city due to poor air quality.
