A woman constable handling the front desk at the office of Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) was manhandled by a woman complainant on Tuesday morning. The complainant was angry over indifference of police to an enquiry that she had requested. Out of rage, she slapped the woman constable.

Before anybody realised the gravity of the situation, the accused had already fled. Based on the victim’s statement; a case has been registered against the accused woman under Sections 186 (obstructing public servant from discharging duties), 353 (assault), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code at Madhu Vihar Police station of East Delhi, but no arrests have been made so far. Police are now scanning the CCTV footage of the cameras installed on the office premises.

Police said that the incident took place on Tuesday morning when the victim constable, Sunita Singh (36), was assaulted by the accused. “The victim told her superiors that around 11.15 am, a resident of Nirmal Vihar, Aarti Gulati came to her desk and started grilling her regarding her tenant verification forms,” a senior police officer said.

The woman constable stated in her complaint that few days ago, the accused had submitted her tenant verification and frequently came to the DCP office since then. “Singh asked Aarti to calm down as she was talking to another complainant. Infuriated with this, Aarti started screaming and also abused her. After a heated argument, she slapped the victim repeatedly and tore off her uniform as well. Aarti also threatened her that after talking with senior officers, she would get her suspended,” the officer added.

Taken aback by the boorish behaviour of Aarti, Singh screamed and raised an alarm for help. However, the accused managed to escape from the spot when security personnel tried resolving their matter.
