Police tracking pattern in attacks on NE people

Delhi Police is investigating the roles of anti-national elements behind the sudden spurt in attacks against people from the North-east. Senior Delhi Police officers now say that they have found a definite trend behind the mindless violence against the people from North-east, especially students. Though the attacks are random but there has been no let up as the Delhi Police has registered seven cases and it may register more FIRs till the culprits behind this sudden escalation in hate attacks are identified and brought to the book. The Delhi Police is also looking into the roles of protesters who had landed at Vasant Vihar police station following the rape of a 14-year-old Manipuri girl. The protesters were demanding ‘Azadi’ (freedom) indicating Maoist overtones. On Tuesday, several protesters reached Mehrauli police station and raised slogans against police.

When asked about the unabated violence against North-East people, a senior police official said that there was a pattern behind these attacks. What has baffled the cops is that fact that there is a sizeable population of students from the North-East region in north and northwest Delhi and these areas have remained peaceful. All the six incidents reported from south and southeast Delhi are being investigated. Though all those involved in these attacks have been arrested by the police but sleuths are also looking into various aspects too, a police official said.

“Though all these incidents can be termed as plain cases of crime but the tenor and nature of attacks on the hapless North easterners is a cause of worry. Attempts are being made to identify the trouble mongers who could be part of a bigger conspiracy to shame the Indian Capital, the official added.
