Police to slap hefty fine against illegal number plates

In a clampdown on the motorists who have improper number plates fitted on their vehicles, Delhi Traffic Police will launch a stringent drive from Wednesday. Once the drive is initiated, the offenders will not be able to get away with a meagre sum of Rs100 and will now be challaned hefty sum ranging from Rs2,000 up to Rs5,000.

Since the violations are rampant with the commercial vehicles, traffic police in the first phase will concentrate on the commercial vehicles and subsequently it will be extended to the private vehicles as well.

The offenders will be booked under the registration of number plate violations. The drive will be against the vehicles, which are not fitted with registration plates as per the legible size, width and the height of the character.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Anil Shukla said, “Traffic Inspectors as well as the Zonal Officers will be armed with the digital cameras to take photographic evidence of the challans issued, in case the offenders try to contest the prosecutions. A database of the violators will be collected manually and will be available with the control room. This will allow the prosecuting officer to cross check whether the offender is a repeat violator. Those prosecuted will be issued challans in the court, with a minimum penalty of Rs2,000, which can be increased up to Rs5,000.”

He added that over 70 thousand challans have been issued in the first six months of this year for vehicles fitted with defective number plates.

“The major number plate violations are caused by the private cars with 31,400 penalised in the period, followed by the light goods vehicle (lGV) with 4,700 challans, HTVs with 2,497 challans and taxis and TSRs with 357 challans each. As the first phase of the drive will concentrate on the commercial vehicles, traffic police will be active at the ten regulated border areas of the national Capital. The second phase of the drive will focus on the private cars and motorbikes,” added the Additional CP.
