Six people, allegedly belonging to the ‘Gufa Gang’, who used to take shelter in a cave in South Delhi’s Moti Bagh area and also hid the stolen booty there were arrested by the Delhi Police on Thursday.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, south district, Chinmoy Biswalm, said while committing burglaries and robberies, they used surgical hand gloves to ensure that there were no fingerprints left on the scene of the crime.

“They are drug addicts. They revealed that they also used to visit call girls and in order to cater to the expenses incurred on drugs and lust, they started committing burglaries,” said the officer.

The six accused, Virender alias Gadwali (30), Kunal alias Kuldeep (24), Raju (25), Santosh Gupta alias Ghoda (32), Bablu alias Rajasthani (26) and Anand Kant alias Anu (26), were arrested on Thursday from Prem Chand Ki Gufa, behind Smriti Vatika Park, Moti Bagh-I, around 4 pm, the DCP said.

The cave is located in the forest area and is 50 metres in height, said the police official. The accused had discovered it and used to hide in there and keep the stolen articles there. It has two narrow entrances and from the outside, it doesn’t look spacious but inside it is 10 to15 feet in breadth, said the official.

They used to take shelter in the cave when they knew that the police was on the lookout for them. For navigating inside, they used the torches of the stolen cellphones. They didn't put any bulbs or light for fear of attracting attention. With their arrest, 16 cases of burglary and robbery have been solved.

Police recovered Rs 50,000 stolen cash, ten mobile phones, two laptops, one Nikon digital camera (worth Rs 3 lakh), 13 imported wrist watches, jewellery worth Rs 2 lakh, two motorcycles and one scooty, the officer said.

“On April 4, Vandana Rajpal told police that when she woke up around 5 am, she found her house ransacked and gold and diamond jewellery, watches, mobile phones and Rs 1 lakh in cash and other items like mobile speakers, clothes, camera, etc. stolen,” said DCP Biswal.

The police deployed sources to get clues about the burglars active in the area. On the basis of an input, the six accused were arrested after a trap was laid for them.

They were active in the areas of South Campus, Sarojini Nagar, Vasant Vihar, Chanakyapuri, Mandir Marg, Rajender Nagar and RK Puram.

They used to enter the houses through windows and break open the locks with the help of an iron wrench and steal electronic items and cash.
