Delhi Police on Wednesday claimed that the law and order situation in high-security lutyen’s Zone has not deteriorated and heinous offences in the New Delhi district have shown a decline by almost half. Delhi Police’s response came after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has criticised Delhi Police for deteriorating law and order in the highly secured New Delhi district.
“In a letter written to all resident welfare associations (RWAs) of his Assembly constituency, the CM had said a large number of residents had complained of deteriorating law and order situation and that he had sought an appointment with the l-G to discuss the same,” said a senior police official.
However, according to statistics shared by Police, heinous cases have declined from 76 in 2016 to 25 this year in the corresponding period from January to May. The solving percentage has also increased from 37 to 80 per cent. Robbery cases also declined from 45 to 7 cases while solving percentage has increased from 12 per cent to 17 per cent, police said.
According to high rank officials, all rape, dacoity and murder cases have been worked out. Snatching cases have seen a minor decline from 102 to 98 cases this year. They also claimed that riot cases have declined from nine to two this year. Senior officials from the New Delhi district claimed that bicycle patrolling around public parks and special pickets to check snatching, robbery and burglary have led to this decline.
Apart from routine policing, New Delhi district witnesses regular dharnas and demonstrations. On an average 8 to 10 demonstrations/protests are held daily. The year 2017 has witnessed 2283 dharnas and demonstrations as compared to 1921 in the same period during the year 2016.
