Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has accused the Delhi Police of not conducting proper investigations in the Delhi riots cases.
Senior AAP leader and MLA Atishi said on Saturday that in charge sheet, only 35 out of over 700 cases have been filed even after a long span of 1.5 years into the investigation. “The Delhi police has no intention of catching the real culprits.All we want to understand is why the Delhi Police are not carrying out a proper investigation. Is the Delhi police protecting someone in the investigation,” she asked?
Quoting various judicial opinions, Atishi said “In February 2020, Justice Murlidhar of the Delhi High Court asked the Delhi Police why they had not taken any action on the videos that contained inflammatory speeches of politicians.
The Delhi police replied that they did not see those videos.
Then the court pulled up the police and showed them the videos in the court itself.”
She further said in November 2020, the court made striking observations against the Delhi police in multiple cases as it had not conducted any proper investigation in the Delhi riots. “They observed that the Delhi police was continuously presenting their own officers as witnesses, without any CCTV footage or other witnesses. The court itself said that it is not hard to believe that Delhi police is planting fake witnesses,” she added.
The AAP leader further informed that in one of the cases, the court granted bail to a 65 year old man and observed that he was the victim of the riots. The court said, “The investigation by the Delhi Police shows a total non-application of mind even to the extent of vindictiveness. The court further said that the investigation of the Delhi police had multiple ‘gaping holes.’
Citing a recent observation by Additional Sessions Judge, Justice Vinod Yadav, Atishi said that the failure and incompetency of Delhi police was again pointed out in a sessions court of Delhi recently.
