The Delhi Police on Monday conducted a “Mega Drug Destruction Event,” incinerating a staggering 1,847 kilograms of seized narcotics, valued at approximately 35 crore in the international market. The drive was part of its determined mission to achieve a ‘Drug-Free Delhi by 2027’.
Lieutenant Governor (LG) Vinai Kumar Saxena inaugurated the destruction drive with the powerful slogan, “Ravan Dahan Se Pehle, Madak Padarthon Ka Dahan” (Destruction of narcotics before the destruction of Ravan).
This significant haul represented drugs seized over the last 50 years from 1974 to 2025 from various districts and the Crime Branch. The material destroyed included approximately 1,730 kg of cannabis, 93 kg of charas, 4 kg of heroin, and smaller quantities of cocaine, Amphetamine, Tramadol, and approx 21 kg of Alprazolam tablets.
The event, which was the Delhi Police’s eighth destruction drive and held at Biotic Waste Solutions Pvt. Ltd., was attended by LG Saxena and Commissioner of Police (CP) Satish Golchha. The campaign underscored the collective effort to combat drug abuse and also aligned with the nationwide “Drug Vinishtikaran Pakhwada” called by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) from September 15 to 30, 2025.
LG Saxena commended the police’s relentless campaign against narcotic drugs and called upon all stakeholders to cooperate in making Delhi ‘Drug Free’ by 2027, while CP Golchha reaffirmed the department’s commitment to the complete eradication of drug traffickers, calling the destruction a powerful statement against the proliferation of narcotics and an effort to raise public awareness.
The police reported rigorous efforts under ‘Operation Kavach,’ noting that a total of 1,674 cases under the NDPS Act were registered in 2025 (up to September 15), leading to the arrest of 2,163 drug traffickers, a significant achievement.
The crackdown extends to financial assets derived from drug trafficking, with the police seizing properties worth over `21.5 crore this year, with an additional 5 crore in the final stages of investigation.
LG specifically praised the strict action taken under the PITNDPS Act. So far, four detention orders under the PITNDPS Act have been issued this year, and proposals against 32 more repeat drug traffickers are currently under process.
Demonstrating the ongoing effort to rid the Capital of drugs, the police detailed past drives conducted under the “Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan,” stating that the total value of drugs destroyed over the last three years is estimated at approximately `13,796 crore.
Previous destruction drives included the incineration of large quantities like 15,700 kg on June 26, 2023, and 10,631kg on February 20, 2024.
To bolster public cooperation, the police highlighted the “MANAS” portal and helpline number 1933, launched in January 2025, which allows the public to provide anonymous information about narco offenders and even claim rewards.
