Police cut the cord on Trilokpuri's prank callers

Published on:

Hoax callers continued to keep police on their toes and spread canards in the recently riot-scarred Trilokpuri area in East Delhi. Police command control room received around 11 calls out of which five were found to be hoax.

The East district police went into a tailspin after it received a PCR call about alleged violence in Block 27. The caller claimed that drunken louts in the area were pelting stones and creating a rumpus. When police officers reached the spot, calm prevailed in the area. They scoured the bylanes and no purported stone pelting had taken place.

Soon the command room was flooded with calls — some claiming violence would take place, others saying bottles were being flung from terraces. However, the ground situation revealed a different albeit calmer picture. A man in Block 27 had guzzled beer and supposedly tossed the bottle. The locals in the area presumed it to be fallout from a dust-up and made panic calls to police.

Having learnt lessons from the Trilokpuri skirmish, police wasted no time in registering a case against five such hoax callers. “A case under section 505 (whoever makes, publishes or circulates any statement, rumour or report) and 182 (false information) of IPC has been registered against the callers,” said a police officer.
