As Delhi University is all set to welcome its new batch of outstation students, a major concern will be having home-style cooked food at pocket friendly rates. A healthy diet is on the checklist of not just students but even their parents. This is where tiffin or dabba services act as saviours to pacify the hunger needs of students and the anxieties of their parents. Available at affordable rates, these services are operational at both North Campus and South Campus area.
“I have entered this business recently and already cater to around 60 students on a daily basis. Our package is a three-time meal. It is a win-win situation for both children as well as us,” said Gagan Ahuja, owner of Coco Foods in Kamla Nagar. Same is the case with many other dabbawallas on North Campus as the area has a large population of paying guests.
The North Campus dabbawallas usually deliver to areas such as Kamla Nagar, Hudson lane, Model town, GTB Nagar and Mukherjee Nagar. The prices range from `3,000 per month for vegetarian and go up to `4,000 for non-vegetarian. Each vegetarian dabba comprises a dry subzi, a curry subzi/dal, chapatti, rice, curd and salad. Non-vegetarian meal includes the same options except for dal which gets replaced with a non-veg curry. Sweet dishes are also provided on some days to add variety to the package.
For those who don’t prefer garlic and onions in their dishes, Jain Tiffin Services gratify their needs. “Our food is mostly without onion and garlic but if someone asks us to add some, we do,” said Vikas Jain, the owner.
On the South corner of the university, dabbawallas do exist but options are limited and are quite expensive.
