A 24-year-old woman was found dead at her in-laws residence in RK Puram area of South Delhi on Thursday morning. She was been identified as Konika, a manager with Punjab National Bank (PNB). Her husband is a senior official with Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Since the marriage was less than seven years old, a Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) inquest has been ordered into the incident.

According to police, Konika was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside her room when her husband and his family checked in on her. However, Konika’s parents have alleged she was murdered by her overbearing in-laws for not fulfilling their dowry demands. Konika had wanted to visit her parental home in Shahdara to celebrate Dussehra. However, her husband forced her to stay back. Incensed, she decided to end her life. The woman’s parents told police that their son-in-law and his parents pressed her for dowry and did not let her visit her parental home.

A case has been registered at RK Puram police station and the accused husband has been arrested and charged with dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. Konika got married to the RBI official in December 2012; they were residing in RBI Colony, an officer said. The couple has a one-year-old son. The body has been handed over to her family after an autopsy.
