The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is facing difficulty in acquiring land for the construction of the Urban Extension Roads (UERs) because of the land Acquisition Bill, which has been sent to the Select Committee of Parliament.
UERs were planned in 2011 with an idea to decongest the heavy traffic zones in the Capital and were expected to be completed in 2015 but the construction works for the project haven't been initiated yet. According to DDA officials, the primary obstacle is unauthorised colonies.
"As per the plan, all three UERs will be connected to NH-1 and some location towards Yamuna. For one of the UERs, we have to expand the road from Mundka (Delhi) to Rohtak, and the 12 km stretch is occupied by slum dwellers. It is still under consideration to remove the slum dwellers and rehabilitate those dislodged," said a DDA official on Wednesday.
The UERs plan was made to decongest the arterial roads in Delhi which comes under Master Plan 2021. The idea was to upgrade the city roads, extend the existing corridors and provide seamless connectivity with the NCR cities without passing through inner areas of the national Capital.
"We have already written about the land issue to the Delhi Government and are waiting for their response, we will start the upgradation process soon," the DDA official added.
As part of these UERs, the DDA was expected to build two major bypass roads connecting NH-8 and NH-2 to Wazirabad bypass that will facilitate traffic from Gurgaon and Faridabad to city without hitting the already congested ring road. The total length of UERs is 157.16 km.
