Phd scholar batters couple over parking

A couple residing in South Delhi’s upmarket Sainik Farms was allegedly thrashed and abused by a PhD student in South Delhi’s Saket after a heated exchange of words over a parking issue. The ugly incident took place on Sunday afternoon when the couple was parking their Audi outside Anupam Cinema. The couple ended up being hospitalised after being boxed by the offender who turned out to be a research scholar. He was booked on charges of assault, wrongful confinement and outraging the modesty of a woman.

A senior police officer said that the accused has been identified as Amit, a resident of Saket in South Delhi. His father is a businessman. “The incident took place on Sunday afternoon around 3 pm, when the couple went to the parking lot to get their car. They were inside the car and their driver had gone to fetch a bottle of water when the spat broke out,” a police officer added.

In the meantime, the accused Amit, who came in his Honda Jazz was looking for a place to park his car and reportedly asked the couple to give him right of way. He honked repeatedly and asked the couple to move their vehicle since he wanted that parking slot. The couple reportedly asked him to wait since the driver was gone for a while. “Amit did not listen to their pleas. He kept on honking and turned violent. He started misbehaving with them by hurling abuses at them. He attacked the couple when they asked him to restrain himself,” a police officer said

After a heated argument, Amit came out of his car and started thrashing the couple. He forcibly pulled the husband out of the car and reportedly slapped and punched him. When the victim’s wife intervened, he pushed her aside and started misbehaving with her as well. “Meanwhile, some passersby informed police by calling up the Police Control Room (PCR). A police party soon reached the spot and took the accused in preventive custody,” the officer added.

Amit tried to escape from the car park after he saw police personnel arriving but he was soon overpowered.

Police took the couple to a nearby hospital for first aid. “Based on the victims’ complaint, a case has been registered under Sections 354-A (misbehaving with a woman), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 341 (wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Saket Police Station of South Delhi and the accused was arrested,” a police officer said. Police are trying to access the CCTV footage from the parking lot to build a watertight case against the offender, a police official informed.
