PhD aspirants of Delhi University are agitated over being refused admission by the Modern Indian languages (MIl) and literacy Studies Department, which is asking them to submit their MA final year’s results, which are yet to be declared. This is not restricted to just this department but around hundred students who qualified the entrance examination for PhD research, held on July 22, were called for the viva two days later, after short-listing few candidates. But, they were denied admission.
“This is a matter of DU, we have done our MA here and our results are awaited. We were unaware that we will need to submit our results at the time of admission. Only after we got selected and were called for the viva, we were asked for the final year’s marks. Either the university must release our results or they should let us at least get admitted on provisional basis,” said a student.
The aspirants also tried to take up their grievance with the Board of Research Studies, but in vain. They demanded that the university should solve it by directing the departments to allow provisional admissions. The issue is quite relevant in MPhil courses too.
“The students have sought intervention of the board, but it has been of no use. This problem is not one department specific. Students are not coming together to address the issue fearing victimisation as it is a matter of their career,” said Sachin N, a DUTA elected executive member, who teaches at the Dayal Singh College.
When the department of MIl and literary Studies was approached, a senior Professor from the department, Nandita Basu said that everything is done as per rule laid down by the university.
“It is very unfortunate that our own students are at the receiving end. We have 75 marks for the written examination, 25 for interview, 5 marks for NET-qualified students and 20 marks for the column of MA and M.Phil education. For those who have MA marks pending automatically get rejected. Even a topper of our MA Bengali has been refused admission,” Basu explained.
