Participation certificate won't be enough to enter DU

Delhi University (DU) will not consider those candidates who have only the “participation” certificate at State or district level, for admission under the sports quota this year. Rather those candidates who have secured some rank/position (either I, II or III) at district or state level sports competition would be eligible to apply under the sports quota.

Delhi University (DU) under its sports quota grants admissions broadly under four categories such as; international, national, state and district levels. While admissions under national and international category (both position and participation)  will be considered, admissions under state and district category would be made solely on the basis of position or rank.  This is contrary to the rule last year when under the State category also both position and participation were considered. The registration for the sports quota admission will begin with opening of Undergraduate (UG) admission portal. The registration process for UG courses will begin from May 15 next.

Also this year under sports quota both Under-19 and Under-17 category have been clubbed together. “That means similar marks would be given for the same rank in both categories. Similarly for participation, both Under-19 and Under-17 will carry same marks,” said a university official, on anonymity. He informed that the decision of Delhi University to club both the categories came after the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) allegedly removed the “blockade” that says only students who are in XI or XII can play Under-19.  “Now even an X standard student is eligible for playing under-19. Following the removal of blockade by SGFI we have also clubbed both the categories for convenience of aspirants applying under sports quota,” he said.

Also, considering the gravity of the problems faced by sportspersons of DU who go for participating in national and international level sports events, face difficulties in their semester exams due to clash of dates. Delhi University Sports Council (DUSC) now wants a system of “Contingent Exam” to be introduced for such candidates. Whereby, flexibility in dates for appearing in university exams would be provided to such talented sportsperson who bring laurels to DU in international and national sports events.
