Parents of triplets bear the brunt of Capital pollution

Delhi’s polluted air was worst nightmare to a West Delhi couple, who were blessed with triplets through In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) after 10 years of marriage. Two of the triplets suffered breathing problem no sooner their parents took them to the balcony of their house. They are being treated at Neonatal Intensive care Unit of Nurture IVF Centre at Naraina Vihar and are showing signs of improvement.

IVF is the technique by which egg from mother and sperm of father is fertilised outside in laboratory, thereafter the embryo is transferred to the womb of mother. The technique is used when parents fail to conceive naturally.

Dr Archana Dhawan Bajaj, Gynecologist, Obstetrician & IVF Expert, Nurture IVF Centre said perhaps when parents took the children out in balcony, smog hit them. They will be kept under observation in hospital till they fully recover, Dr Bajaj said.

Dr Bajaj said triplets who were discharged in a healthy condition, developed complications due to poor weather conditions. They were premature babies, hence keeping them secure was important.

“Air pollution, especially during winters, is something to be taken very seriously. Moreover, winter is also a season of cold and flu. Newborns and their immune systems are especially susceptible to pollutants and germs. Cold thin air can create a breathing complication on lungs of baby. Whether it is excessive smog or bitter cold, newborns should not be out in any of it. The baby needs to be in an area that is not too hot or too cold,” said Dr Archana.

She advised all to keep newborns away from air pollution as infant’s lungs are very sensitive and should not be exposed to polluted, contaminated, or generally unclean air.
